Resizing tip
For resizing, PNG or WEBP files are generally recommended because they usually preserve image quality better.
Workflow tip
It is recommended to resize or crop your image first and convert it afterwards for the best results.
Convert PNG images to WebP for free, directly in your browser — no upload limits, no account, and no software to install. This converter is built for anyone who needs smaller, faster-loading images for websites, online stores, or content management systems, from web developers preparing production assets to store owners optimizing product photos and bloggers compressing screenshots before publishing.
PNG is the standard for screenshots, logos, and graphics with transparency, but PNG files are frequently two to five times larger than they need to be for the web. Converting to WebP preserves the same visual quality, including transparency, while cutting file size significantly — one of the most common fixes recommended in Core Web Vitals and PageSpeed audits.
How to Convert PNG to WebP
- 1
Upload your PNG files
Drag and drop one or more .png files into the upload area above, or click Select IMG to browse your device. You can upload several files at once for batch conversion.
- 2
Keep WebP as the output
WebP is already preselected on this page, so you don't need to change anything unless you want a different target format.
- 3
Optionally enable compression
If file size matters more than maximum quality — for product thumbnails or blog images, for example — turn on automatic compression before converting to switch WebP into its lossy mode.
- 4
Run the conversion
Click Convert now. Your file is processed temporarily during the browser session and deleted automatically within one hour, so nothing is stored permanently.
- 5
Download your WebP file
When processing finishes, download the converted image. If you need to resize or crop it next, use Continue with file to move it straight into the next tool without re-uploading.
Tip: If you're converting a transparent PNG such as a logo, take a quick look at the result — WebP keeps transparency, but a visual check is worth it when automatic compression is enabled.
PNG vs. WebP: What's the Difference?
Compression
PNG uses lossless compression, so every pixel is preserved exactly. That makes it the go-to format for screenshots, diagrams, and graphics with sharp edges or text, but it also limits how small the files can get. WebP supports both lossless and lossy compression. In lossy mode WebP files are usually significantly smaller than a comparable PNG with minimal visible quality loss; even in lossless mode WebP is typically smaller than PNG for the same image.
Transparency
Both PNG and WebP support an alpha channel, so converting a transparent logo or icon to WebP will not flatten or fill the transparent areas. This is a key reason WebP can fully replace PNG for most web graphics rather than just photos.
Browser and software support
WebP works in every major modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari 14 and later — and in current CMS platforms such as WordPress 5.8+ and Shopify. Some older image editors, email clients, and legacy plugins still can't display WebP, which is the main reason to keep an original PNG for print or offline software.
When to keep PNG
- You need maximum compatibility with older software or print workflows.
- The image will be edited further in tools that don't fully support WebP.
- You're storing master source files or documentation opened outside a browser.
When to choose WebP
- You're optimizing images for website performance and Core Web Vitals.
- You're uploading product images, blog graphics, or icons to a modern CMS.
- Smaller file size matters more than universal software compatibility.
For nearly all web-facing images, WebP is the better choice today: it keeps PNG's transparency while reducing file size. Reserve PNG for source files, print materials, and software with limited format support.
FAQ
Upload your PNG file with the tool above, keep WebP selected as the output format (it's preselected here), and click Convert now. Your WebP file is ready to download within seconds, with no account, watermark, or installation required.
It can be. WebP supports lossless compression, so a straight conversion preserves every pixel while usually still producing a smaller file than the original PNG. If you enable automatic compression, WebP switches to lossy mode, which looks near-identical for most images but reduces size further.
No. WebP supports a full alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds in logos, icons, and UI graphics are preserved during conversion. It's still worth a quick visual check on complex images, especially with compression enabled.
Yes. You can upload several PNG files together and convert the whole batch to WebP in one run, which is useful when preparing a set of product photos or blog images.
Most modern browsers and editors support WebP, but some older or offline applications don't. If you run into a compatibility issue, you can convert the file back to PNG with our WebP to PNG converter and keep working.
